All 10 species of European woodpeckers can be observed within 50 km from Kosovo. Other highlights are mountain species like: Aquila chrysaetos (Golden Eagle), Tetrao urogallus (Capercaillie), Bonasa bonasia (Hazel Grouse), Glaucidium passerinum (Pygmy Owl), Aegolius funereus (Tengmalm's Owl), Parus cristatus (Crested Tit), etc. There is a heronry nearby and the Maritsa River with many Mediterranean and eastern species: Nycticorax nycticorax (Night Heron), Ixobrychus minutus (Little Bittern), Ardeola ralloides (Squacco Heron), Egretta garzetta (Little Egret), Accipiter brevipes (Levant Sparrowhawk), Haematopus ostralegus (Oystercatcher), Coracias garrulus (Roller), Hirundo daurica (Red-rumped Swallow), Lanius nubicus (Masked Shrike), Monticola saxatilis (Rock Thrush).
